The situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains deeply alarming. Following the rebel takeover of Goma at the end of January 2025 — an offensive that caused more than 8,000 deaths in a single day — millions of civilians have been forced to flee their homes. The United Nations estimates that over 2 million people have been displaced and more than 3 million face severe food insecurity. Tens or even hundreds of thousands are making their way to the city of Beni, 300 km west of Goma, where at least 12,000 households lack food and medicine.
In response, Mission Mennonite (MM), the Peace Reflection Commission (CRP), and the Mennonite Churches' Relief Fund have joined forces to launch their 7th solidarity day. The initiative is particularly focused on women who have lost their husbands in the conflict, and their children. The local organization Bana ya Kivuvu will travel to the area to purchase and distribute relief kits containing food, essential supplies, and blankets. The project also includes ongoing support for assisted families and vocational training for women to help them provide for their households. The estimated cost per family is approximately €150.
Churches and community groups are invited to organize a festive and mobilizing event around Pentecost Monday, June 9, 2025, or on a nearby date — a solidarity walk, a shared meal, a sports challenge, or a fundraising run. Each event should include a presentation of the project and a fundraising component. Communication tools (flyers, a video teaser) are available from Mission Mennonite.
